Description: |

On June 30, 2012, The Kierra Keeps Caring Foundation will host its 3rd Annual Walk 4 Life Fundraiser. This event will begin promptly at 10am on the Schenley Park Trails in the City of Pittsburgh. Immediately following the walk, a Celebration Cookout will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Pavilion, also within Schenley Park. All participants are required to pay a $10 fee which will allow them to participate in the walk, as well as gain access to the Celebration Cookout
In a time when we are witnessing a vast amount of our youth falling victim to violence within our urban neighborhoods, the Foundation proves invaluable by obtaining its current goal to eliminate the prevalence of violent acts against our youth. The goal is attained by way of educating our youth about the essential skills needed to build character, develop appropriate communication skills, as well as motivating our youth to acquire a strong value system.
We strongly believe that by encouraging cohesiveness within our communities, holistically we can change the destiny of our youth by way of promoting a positive quality of life for our young people. Our fundraising goal for this year’s event is $10,000. It is the expectation for this event to grow and surpass the success than that of the previous year. All proceeds received will be applied directly to the Foundation and its Annual Scholarship Fund. For two consecutive years, the monies raised from the Annual Walk 4 Life, has permitted the Foundation to host an Essay Contest in which the grand Prize winner receives $1000 toward their post-secondary education. This year’s participants were asked to submit an essay entitled “How Has Gang Violence Impacted the Urban Community?” The winner will be announced at the Celebration Cookout, and they will be given the opportunity to share their award winning essay with those in attendance.
The Kierra Keeps Caring Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established in 2009 by Carla Gaines-Robinson in remembrance of her daughter, ShaVaughn Kierra Wallace. ShaVaughn was an intelligent, ambitious, and free-spirited young woman who, shortly after completing her freshman year at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, became an innocent victim to gang violence in the City’s North Side. ShaVaughn was only 18 years old when her life was stolen by such a senseless act of violence. Unfortunately, the continuous feelings of anger and grief experienced by ShaVaughn’s family and friends are far too commonly shared amongst other families within our community.
