Event:
  Conserving Our Paper Heritage

Description:   Historic works on paper (documents, prints, posters, etc) serve as important records of the places, events and people that have shaped our world. In 2008, The Westmoreland acquired the Joy and R. David Brocklebank Fraktur Collection. Fraktur is the German word that refers to a stylized, highly decorative watercolor or watercolor-and-ink painting often bearing elaborate calligraphy and standardized motifs. This collection of over 250 German folk-art documents consist mainly of birth and baptismal records (geburts and taufschein) but also include house blessings, writing examples and narratives. These works contain the genealogical record of the early immigrants to our region. Please join paper conservator Janet English Heller as she describes the painstaking process of assessing and repairing these delicate documents as the museum prepares to make them available for public view. You’ll also learn some tips on how to properly care for and display your own valuable paper treasures. Conservator Janet English Heller holds a B.A. in Art History and Chemistry from Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH and an M.A., Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from the State University of New York in Cooperstown. She has worked as a conservator for the Intermuseum Laboratory in Oberlin, the Pacific Rim Conservation Center in Honolulu, HI, and the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. In 1994 she founded Special Collections Conservation Services, Inc. (SCCS) specializing in the conservation of paper and parchment. She has been a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation since 1992. Call 724/837-1500 ext. 10 or visit www.wmuseumaa.org for more information.
